After the needles have been inserted, you may feel a heaviness, numbness or tingling. A feeling of deep heaviness or numbness, called “Deqi” (pronounced duh chee) means the treatment is working.
Thinner needles, less pain
New patients of Acupuncture are often surprised by how painless the procedure it is. You may feel a slight prick when the needle is inserted, but it is much less than the prick you feel during an injection or blood draw, this is because the needles are much thinner.
These needles play a large role in the painlessness of acupuncture. The type of needle most commonly used in acupuncture, known as the “filiform” needle, is very thin and made of stainless steel. Unlike hypodermic needles, filiform needles are solid and don’t have cutting edges. The National Academy of Medical Acupuncture notes that filiform needles are less likely to cause bruising than hypodermic needles. Filiform acupuncture needles tend to range from .12 millimeters to .30 mm in diameter. They are smaller than typical hypodermic needles, which are usually around .80 mm.
